Mullens is a city in Wyoming County, West Virginia along the Guyandotte River. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 1,769. Mullens is also the hometown of New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni. In July 2001, the town was nearly destroyed by flash flooding. While the town has attempted to redevelop with the aid of state and federal recovery money, many local businesses and residents have left the area permanently. Organizations like the Mullens-based Rural Appalachian Improvement League are working to improve conditions across the region.

History

Mullens was incorporated as a town on September 17, 1912 and operated under a charter issued by the Circuit Court of Wyoming County. It was named for A. J. Mullins, who owned the land upon which the town is built, the incorporated name being spelled "Mullens" through inadvertence. An Act of the West Virginia Legislature granting a charter to the City of Mullens was passed February 22, 1929.

Things to do

Mullens does not have movie theaters, bowling alleys, malls or anything of the sort. However, there are still many things to do in and near the town. There are several parks with basketball courts, tennis courts, and a community pool. There is also a new park on top of "Tater Hill" (This is the hill that overlooks the town and has a large cross on top of it.). There is a picnic shelter and a deck that overlooks town. There are also several walking trails on the hill. In fact, unless you have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, walking is your best bet. There are several good local restaurants such as Second Street Station and Romas Pizzaria. Buildings throughout downtown Mullens are adorned with beautiful murals for pedestrian enjoyment. The Mullens Opportunity Center (MOC) has regular open mic nights and many other community activities. Twin Falls State Park is within five miles of Mullens city limits. In the future there will be a trailhead to connect to the Hatfield-Mccoy trail system and the Coalfields Expressway will connect Mullens to Beckley being the first four lane road in the county.
