Claims to Fame

One of Cameron's claims to fame is its historical beach-style swimming pool, one of a few in the entire nation. Another significant event in the history of Cameron is its burning in the early 1900s, which lead to legislation requiring all buildings in the downtown area to be made of materials other than wood. In addition, the town's history is built upon two unifying traits: high school wrestling, and the use of smokeless tobacco.

High School Wrestling

Cameron High School's Wrestling Team won four straight West Virginia Class A State Championships in the early 90s, a record that stood for almost 10 years. In addition to a historically great team, there were also some great individual wrestlers in the history of the school. Some of the school's greats include:

  • R.C. Anderson, 4X State Champion (One of less than 10 in WV State History), 138 Career Wins.
  • Chad Burge, 3X State Champion, 140 Career Wins.
  • Eric Potts, Multiple State Champion, Son of Legendary Coach Jim Potts.
  • Roger Kupfer, 2X State Champion, 156 Career Wins (School Record)
  • Casey Hughes, 3X State Champion and 2004 Undisputed WV State Champion 145 lbs, 138 Career Wins.
