Rail lines

The Village has been supported in the past by two rail lines. One traveled between Rockford area and Kenosha and although it no longer exists, the Right of Way can be seen easily in aerial images and can be hiked through Silver Lake County Park. The other is the present Canadian National, once called the Wisconsin Central and Soo, to Chicago and northern reaches. The existence of these two rail lines made it possible for this area and lake (once called Shellfish Lake) to support several large ice houses between 1895-1920's. The ice from these houses helped to support the need for ice in Chicago and Kenosha. After the need for ice met its demise, the boarding houses became hotels and resorts. These hostels helped to support the vacationers who found their way to the clear lake.

Use as a film location

The 2005 remake of the film The Amityville Horror was shot on location at a private residence on Silver Lake that has, over the years, been called The Rustman Residence, The Krause Residence and Oakview.
