Putney is a town in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,634 at the 2000 census.

In 2006, Putney was one of the first American towns to have its citizens pass a resolution endorsing the impeachment of President George W. Bush. [1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 26.8 square miles (69.4 km²), of which, 26.8 square miles (69.4 km²) of it is land and 0.04% is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,634 people, 958 households, and 603 families residing in the town. The population density was 98.3 people per square mile (37.9/km²). There were 1,049 housing units at an average density of 39.1/sq mi (15.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.63% White, 1.03% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.56% of the population.

There were 958 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 16.5% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 106.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $40,346, and the median income for a family was $50,170. Males had a median income of $29,922 versus $25,217 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,576. About 6.2% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.5% of those under age 18 and 5.4% of those age 65 or over.

Putney is home to The Putney School, one of the country's best-known alternative independent high schools.

Landmark College, the first college exclusively for learning disabled students, is located in Putney.

Greenwood School, the preeminent boarding school for boys ages 9-15 who have been diagnosed with dyslexia and/or related language-based learning disabilities.

Sandglass Theater, a world renowned puppet theater, is located on Kimball Hill in the village [2].
