Rhome (pronounced Rome) is a city in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 551 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Rhome is located at 33°2′56″N, 97°28′3″W (33.048902, -97.467483)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 551 people, 222 households, and 162 families residing in the city. The population density was 310.6 people per square mile (120.2/km²). There were 248 housing units at an average density of 139.8/sq mi (54.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.74% White, 0.73% African American, 1.09% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 5.99% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.71% of the population.

There were 222 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. 23.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 105.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $40,667, and the median income for a family was $45,625. Males had a median income of $34,667 versus $24,861 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,965. About 10.3% of families and 13.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.3% of those under age 18 and 17.8% of those age 65 or over.

In Culture

  • Dallas band Old 97's named their first record Hitchhike to Rhome. The title comes from a lyric in the song "Stoned." Rhome philosopher Marvel Bubba Smith once said "Rhome good ole Rhome take out the R and it spells Home.
