Parkston is a city in Hutchinson County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.4 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 1,674 people, 699 households, and 448 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,839.5 people per square mile (710.3/km²). There were 752 housing units at an average density of 826.4/sq mi (319.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.79% White, 0.18% African American, 1.55% Native American, and 0.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population.

Parkston's high school mascot is the Trojans. Their colors are orange and blue.

There were 699 households out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% were married couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% were non-families. 33.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 21.1% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 32.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 85.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,662, and the median income for a family was $39,688. Males had a median income of $29,063 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,260. About 3.3% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 11.1% of those age 65 or over.
