West Greenwich is a town in Kent County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 5,085 at the 2000 census. West Greenwich is one of only three jurisdictions in the state of Rhode Island to cast a majority of its votes for George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election.Rhode Island Election Results. Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 51.3 square miles (132.9 km²), of which, 50.6 square miles (131.1 km²) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) of it (1.34%) is water.

Proposed Town of Westconnaug

In February 2008 Rhode Island State Representative Nicholas Gorham proposed legislation to create a super town of rural communities including Scituate. Other towns that would be included in his proposed town of "Westconnaug" are West Greenwich, Exeter, Foster, Glocester, and the western part of Coventry.[3]

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,085 people, 1,749 households, and 1,451 families residing in the town. The population density was 100.4 people per square mile (38.8/km²). There were 1,809 housing units at an average density of 35.7/sq mi (13.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.70% White, 0.28% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.24% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.69% of the population.

There were 1,749 households out of which 42.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.3% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.0% were non-families. 13.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $65,725, and the median income for a family is $71,332. Males have a median income of $44,306 versus $32,933 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,750. 4.2% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 15.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
