Settled in 1790 as Taylorville and incorporated in 1893, Taylor is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, four miles (six km) southwest of Scranton on the Lackawanna River. Coal mining and silk manufacturing had been practiced here. In 1900, 4,215 people lived here; in 1910, 9,060; and in 1940, 9,002 people lived in Taylor. The population was 6,475 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Taylor is located at 41°23′29″N, 75°42′55″W (41.391279, -75.715354)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 6,475 people, 2,678 households, and 1,743 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,240.0 people per square mile (478.9/km²). There were 2,872 housing units at an average density of 550.0/sq mi (212.4/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.33% White, 0.34% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.40% from other races, and 0.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.63% of the population.

There were 2,678 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the borough the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.5 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $30,661, and the median income for a family was $43,611. Males had a median income of $30,238 versus $22,185 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $16,714. About 9.4% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over.
