Enola is a census-designated place (CDP) located along the Susquehanna River in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,627 at the 2000 census. Norfolk Southern operates a large classification yard and locomotive shop in Enola. It is a suburb of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

History

Enola sprang into existence with the building of the rail lines that run through the town. The name "Enola" comes from the name of a farm owner's four-year-old daughter. The man, Wesley Miller, sold land to the Pennsylvania Railroad and was given the honor of naming the train station. Eventually, the local post office and the surrounding town also adopted the name.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.8 km²), all of it land.

Enola is located at 40°17′25″N, 76°56′4″W (40.290238, -76.934579)[1].

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 5,627 people, 2,392 households, and 1,459 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,018.9 people per square mile (1,168.1/km²). There were 2,514 housing units at an average density of 1,348.8/sq mi (521.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.93% White, 0.89% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.87% Asian, 0.44% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.

There were 2,392 households out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.84.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 13.0% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $36,564, and the median income for a family was $40,901. Males had a median income of $31,316 versus $25,426 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,740. About 5.0% of families and 7.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.0% of those under age 18 and 2.1% of those age 65 or over.

Trivia

An urban legend about the name "Enola", is that early settlers thought if they spelt the word "alone" backwards no one would move in to their town.
