Ebensburg is a borough centrally located within Cambria Township, located in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, 16 miles (26 km) west of Altoona. It is situated in the Alleghenies about 2025 feet (617 m) above sea level. Ebensburg is located in a rich bituminous coal region. In the past, saw mills, tanneries, wool mills, a foundry, etc., operated there. The number of residents in 1900 was 1,574, and in 1910, 1,978. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,091 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cambria County.[1]
HistoryEbensburg originated in November of 1796, when Rhees Lloyd came to settle there with 20 men. Lloyd offered land to the government in exchange for Ebensburg becoming the county seat, which the government accepted. GeographyEbensburg is located at (40.486388, -78.725461).[2] According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²), of which, 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.72%) is water. DemographicsAs of the census[3] of 2000, there were 3,091 people, 1,357 households, and 823 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,816.0 people per square mile (702.0/km²). There were 1,474 housing units at an average density of 866.0/sq mi (334.8/km²). The racial make-up of the borough was 98.67% White, 0.36% African American, 0.52% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.52% of the population. There were 1,357 households out of which 25.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.90. In the borough the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males. The median income for a household in the borough was $32,628, and the median income for a family was $45,128. Males had a median income of $32,226 versus $24,464 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $19,634. About 6.7% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.8% of those under age 18 and 14.9% of those age 65 or over. PeopleReferences
