Cove is a city in Union County, Oregon, United States. The population was 594 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Cove is located at 45°17′55″N, 117°48′34″W (45.298536, -117.809329)^[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 594 people, 231 households, and 176 families residing in the city. The population density was 732.9 people per square mile (283.1/km²). There were 247 housing units at an average density of 304.8/sq mi (117.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.45% White, 0.17% African American, 1.35% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.34% Pacific Islander, 1.85% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.19% of the population.

There were 231 households out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.8% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,542, and the median income for a family was $42,344. Males had a median income of $31,793 versus $24,063 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,872. About 11.1% of families and 12.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.3% of those under age 18 and 8.0% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Cove High School is located in the center of Cove, and attendance is currently around 70 students. Cove High School is a 1A school and a member of the Old Oregon League, along with Powder Valley, Pine Eagle, Joseph, Wallowa, and Imbler. Cove's mascot is a leopard. The sports offered are football, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, and track.
