Hugo is a city in Choctaw County in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 5,536 at the 2000 census. It is the birthplace of Bill Moyers, B. J. Thomas, James Ling, and William Childress, and serves as winter quarters for some circus performers. It is the county seat of Choctaw County[3]. The town is located in a cultural area of the state known as Little Dixie and the tourist area Kiamichi Country.
GeographyHugo is located at (34.009308, -95.514601)[4]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.6 square miles (14.4 km²), of which, 5.5 square miles (14.3 km²) of it is land and 0.18% is water. DemographicsAs of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,536 people, 2,309 households, and 1,415 families residing in the city. The population density was 999.0 people per square mile (385.8/km²). There were 2,798 housing units at an average density of 504.9/sq mi (195.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 59.43% White, 20.59% African American, 14.05% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 5.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.61% of the population. There were 2,309 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.4% were married couples living together, 20.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.98. In the city the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 79.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.0 males. The median income for a household in the city was $19,321, and the median income for a family was $26,523. Males had a median income of $26,473 versus $17,348 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,676. About 25.5% of families and 29.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 43.5% of those under age 18 and 22.1% of those age 65 or over. References
