Hartshorne is a city in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,102 at the 2000 census. Baseball player Warren Spahn is buried here[citation needed]. Currently, serving as Mayor is Mark Day. Richard Lerblance is currently serving in the State Senate he is from the wonderful town of Hartshorne. Noted philanthropist Geneiveve Rock is also a Hartshorne native.

Geography

Hartshorne is located at 34°50′43″N, 95°33′33″W (34.845198, -95.559265)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km²), of which, 3.5 square miles (9.0 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (3.60%) is water.

Warren Spahn resided outside of Hartshorne in a small ranch house on Blue Mountain. He is buried in Broken Arrow.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,102 people, 881 households, and 580 families residing in the city. The population density was 604.4 people per square mile (233.2/km²). There were 1,014 housing units at an average density of 291.6/sq mi (112.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 70.31% White, 3.62% African American, 19.70% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 5.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.47% of the population.

There were 881 households out of which 28.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% were non-families. 31.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $21,078, and the median income for a family was $26,650. Males had a median income of $25,705 versus $18,603 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,179. About 18.6% of families and 26.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.0% of those under age 18 and 17.5% of those age 65 or over.
