Claims to fame

John Glenn, a former United States Senator and the first American to orbit the Earth, was raised in New Concord and attended Muskingum College, a Presbyterian liberal arts college also located in the village.

New Concord's more down-to-Earth claims to fame include the local John Glenn High School's annual canned food drive, which set national records for five years up to and including 2003. The school has continued to beat this record in 2004-2006. The class of 2007 continued this tradition by collecting 72,230 food items. All food from the annual food drive goes to the Salvation Army in Cambridge and Zanesville.

New Concord is also the hometown of William Rainey Harper, founder and first president of the University of Chicago; it also claims as a native son the exceptional blues/rock guitarist Tom Nelson.

David W. Stewart, United States Senator from Iowa, was born in New Concord.

New Concord is also home to one of the rather unusual S-bridges found along sections of the old National Road.
