Dalton is a village in Wayne County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,605 at the 2000 census. Dalton is served by a branch of the Wayne County Public Library.
GeographyDalton is located at (40.799295, -81.697030)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²), all of it land. DemographicsAs of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,605 people, 605 households, and 456 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,313.9 people per square mile (507.9/km²). There were 628 housing units at an average density of 514.1/sq mi (198.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.32% White, 0.12% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.31% of the population. There were 605 households out of which 38.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.09. In the village the population was spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males. The median income for a household in the village was $45,078, and the median income for a family was $51,838. Males had a median income of $67,045 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,355. About 2.7% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.4% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over. Interesting Facts
Locals in Dalton pronounce their town like "Dal'-ton" with the first syllable pronounced like the first syllable in "Dal-las" , not "DOLL-ton". Locals are particular on how to pronounce the village's name. Dalton has a heated sports rivalry in high school football with Smithville, also in Wayne County.[citation needed] The Dalton High School girls softball team won state championships in 2006 and 2007. Dalton was the site of the first commercial pottery in Ohio, the Houghton Pottery, established in 1841, and was operated by the Houghton family until it was sold in 1946. The business was converted to ceramics and still operates at this time producing kitchen and bathroom decorative fixtures. Dalton is located on U.S. Route 30, the old Lincoln Highway. Allegedly, Lincoln stayed overnight at an inn just east of the town square. References
