Saugerties (New York)

Saugerties is a town in Ulster County, New York, USA. The population was 19,868 at the 2000 census. The Town of Saugerties contains the Village of Saugerties. The town is in the northeast corner of Ulster County.

US Route 9W and the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) pass through the east side of the town.

History

The land was purchased in 1677 from the Esopus tribe by the Dutch settlers and Land Grants were made in the following years. In 1710, there was a large influx of German Palatines, from the Rhineland-Palatinate region.

The town was formed from part of the Town of Kingston in 1811.

Saugerties was the home of Woodstock '94, following on the footsteps of the original Woodstock Festival - which should be noted as actually being held on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York, 1969.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 68.0 square miles (176.2 km²), of which, 64.5 square miles (167.2 km²) of it is land and 3.5 square miles (9.0 km²) of it (5.13%) is water.

The north town line is the border of Greene County, New York, and the east town line, marked by the Hudson River, is the border of Dutchess and Columbia counties.

Esopus Creek enters the Hudson River south of Saugerties village.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 19,868 people, 7,478 households, and 5,062 families residing in the town. The population density was 307.8 people per square mile (118.9/km²). There were 8,257 housing units at an average density of 127.9/sq mi (49.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 91.99% White, 4.06% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.65% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.61% of the population.

There were 7,478 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $42,401, and the median income for a family was $50,033. Males had a median income of $36,400 versus $25,025 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,374. About 6.5% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.1% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.

Notable residents

American Politician Maurice Hinchey resides in Saugerties.

Writer John Thorn, a prolific author, columnist, and noted authority on baseball history, resides in Saugerties.

Writer Susun Weed, women's health expert, and authority on herbal medicine, resides in Saugerties.

Entertainer Jimmy Fallon grew up in Saugerties from age two, following his move from Sunset Park, Brooklyn. His parents currently reside in Saugerties.

The Band resided & recorded in a house affectionately known as 'Big Pink' in West Saugerties; where they recorded 'Music From Big Pink' and 'Basement Tapes' (with Bob Dylan) in 1967.

Katie Cokinos, filmmaker. Since her graduation from Texas A&M University in History/Philosophy Katie has been involved in nearly every aspect of films; she directed four short experimental films prior to her first feature length movie, PORTRAIT OF A GIRL AS A YOUNG CAT, 2000. Katie was also the Managing Director of the Austin Film Society.
