Bay Head is a Borough in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 1,238. Bay Head is situated on the Barnegat Peninsula, a long, narrow barrier peninsula that separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. Together with Mantoloking to south, Bay Head is considered part of the Jersey Shore's "Gold Coast". Bay Head was incorporated as a Borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on June 15, 1886, from portions of Brick Township, based on the results of a referendum held three days earlier.[3] The community was supposed to have been named "Bayhead," after the Bayhead Land Company that developed the area in the 1870s.[4] A railroad sign posted in the 1880s labeled the station as "Bay Head," and the name stuck when the borough was incorporated in 1886.[5]
GeographyBay Head is located at (40.068690, -74.047064)[6]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), of which, 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (15.71%) is water. Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,238 people, 584 households, and 349 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,094.3 people per square mile (810.2/km²). There were 1,053 housing units at an average density of 1,781.3/sq mi (689.1/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.98% White, 0.16% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.48% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.29% of the population. There were 584 households out of which 16.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 5.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% were non-families. 35.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.73. In the borough the population was spread out with 15.4% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 33.7% from 45 to 64, and 25.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 52 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males. The median income for a household in the borough was $77,790, and the median income for a family was $93,055. Males had a median income of $64,063 versus $38,672 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $49,639. About 0.3% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.8% of those under age 18 and 2.1% of those age 65 or over. Local governmentThe Mayor of the Borough of Bay Head is Republican Arthur P. Petracco (R, 2007).[9] Petracco's final term will end in the beginning of the year 2008, as he has publicly announced that he will not run for reelection. Veteran Borough Councilman and local business owner, William W. Curtis has publicly announced his own candidacy for the seat which is up for election on November 6, 2007. The Bay Head Borough Council consists of John M. Berko (R, 2008), William W. Curtis (R, 2009), John DeFilippis (R, 2007), Robert M. Ryan, Sr. (R, 2008), Mary Stockton (R, 2009) and James A. Urner (R, 2007).[10][9] Federal, state and county representationBay Head is in the Fourth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 10th Legislative District.[11] New Jersey's Fourth Congressional District, covering portions of Burlington County, Mercer County, Monmouth County and Ocean County, is represented by Christopher Smith (R). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken). For the 2008-2009 Legislative Session, the 10th district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Andrew R. Ciesla (R, Brick) and in the Assembly by James W. Holzapfel (R, Toms River) and David W. Wolfe (R, Brick). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken). Ocean County is governed by a Board of Chosen Freeholders consisting of five members, elected at large in partisan elections and serving staggered three-year terms. As of 2008, Ocean County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari (Toms River Township, term ends December 31, 2008), Freeholder Deputy Director John C. Bartlett, Jr. (Pine Beach, 2009), John P. Kelly (Eagleswood Township, 2010), James F. Lacey (Brick Township, 2010) and Gerry P. Little (Surf City, 2009).[12] EducationStudents in kindergarten through eighth grade attend public school at Bay Head Elementary School, which had an enrollment of 105 students in the 2004-05 school year. Students in public school for grades 9-12 attend Point Pleasant Beach High School in Point Pleasant Beach, as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Point Pleasant Beach School District.[13] TransportationNew Jersey Transit trains terminate at the Bay Head station and yard, with service on the North Jersey Coast Line north to Penn Station Newark, Hoboken Terminal, and Penn Station New York in Midtown Manhattan. The main roadway through Bay Head is Route 35, a two-lane highway that connects many of the Jersey Shore's small communities.
