Memphis is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,129 at the 2000 census with a projection of 1,124 in 2006. The city is situated on the boundary between Macomb County and St. Clair County, with approximately half of the city in each county.
GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (3.0 km²), of which, 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (2.61%) is water. The Belle River passes through the city. DemographicsAs of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,129 people, 457 households, and 296 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,005.6 per square mile (389.2/km²). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 424.0/sq mi (164.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.25% White, 0.71% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.53% Asian, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.15% of the population. There were 457 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.09. In the city the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males. The median income for a household in the city was $41,705, and the median income for a family was $52,679. Males had a median income of $41,932 versus $27,019 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,983. About 7.8% of families and 10.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.5% of those under age 18 and 15.9% of those age 65 or over. Public schoolsThe Memphis Community School District has an elementary, junior high, and high school. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Yellow Jackets. Additional informationMemphis was established in 1835 and named after Memphis, Egypt, "the City on the Nile." It is located on a bluff overlooking the Belle River. Memphis has a landmark called "The Thing", which is a historical marker noting Memphis as the home of the first automobile. This first automobile ran six miles. It is locally believed that a farmer would not sell his land for more research and development of the automobile, so the creator went south to what is now Dearborn.[citation needed] External links
