Cass City is a village in Tuscola County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,643 at the 2000 census with a projection of 2,575 in 2006.

Cass City is the birthplace of Baseball Hall of Fame member Leland MacPhail, as well as astronaut Brewster H. Shaw. The town is named after the nearby Cass River, which in turn was named after Lewis Cass.

Geography

• According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²), all land.
• It is considered to be part of the Thumb of Michigan, which in turn is a subregion of the Flint/Tri-Cities.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 2,643 people, 1,100 households, and 712 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,523.7 per square mile (589.9/km²). There were 1,159 housing units at an average density of 668.2/sq mi (258.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.69% White, 0.34% African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.23% from other races, and 0.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population.

There were 1,100 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $33,397, and the median income for a family was $41,289. Males had a median income of $31,714 versus $24,853 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,159. About 8.1% of families and 10.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.4% of those under age 18 and 7.1% of those age 65 or over.

In the media

Much of the 1984 film Going Back, starring Bruce Campbell, was filmed in and around Cass City. In fact, the marquee of the historic Cass movie theater appears in one of the film's segments.
