Windsor is a town in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,204 at the 2000 census. The town was formerly known as Malta, and gave its name to the "Malta War", a minor rebellion against the Massachusettes state government in Boston over settlement and land ownership rights in the first decade of the 1800s.[1]

Windsor Day's

The first annual Windsor Day's was held on July 13th & 14th, 2007. At 10:00 in the morning on the 14th, a 1 mile parade was held from Hussey's General Store on Route 32 and 105 to the Windsor Elementary School. Staging for the parade was at the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department's parking lot. The department conducted traffic control for the duration of the parade. A fair was held at the Windsor Fairgrounds after the parade, featuring food, commercial exhibits, Windsor Volunteer Fire Department's "Dunk-a-Firefighter", a magic show, and music from Downeast Brass.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,204 people, 846 households, and 620 families residing in the town. The population density was 63.6 people per square mile (24.6/km²). There were 952 housing units at an average density of 27.5/sq mi (10.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.46% White, 0.27% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.

There were 846 households out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 19.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $40,039, and the median income for a family was $43,792. Males had a median income of $31,146 versus $24,194 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,746. About 5.5% of families and 9.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.3% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.6 square miles (92.2 km²), of which, 34.7 square miles (89.7 km²) of it is land and 0.9 square miles (2.4 km²) of it (2.61%) is water.
