West Gardiner is a town in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,902 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 27.1 square miles (70.1 km²), of which, 24.6 square miles (63.8 km²) of it is land and 2.4 square miles (6.3 km²) of it (8.94%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 2,902 people, 1,115 households, and 831 families residing in the town. The population density was 117.8 people per square mile (45.5/km²). There were 1,308 housing units at an average density of 53.1/sq mi (20.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.76% White, 0.52% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.34% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.45% of the population.

There were 1,115 households out of which 35.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $45,434, and the median income for a family was $48,056. Males had a median income of $30,806 versus $26,357 for females.
