Sullivan is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,185 at the 2000 census. GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 29.6 square miles (76.6 km²), of which, 26.6 square miles (68.8 km²) of it is land and 3.0 square miles (7.7 km²) of it (10.11%) is water. DemographicsGeneral InformationSchools: Sumner Memorial High School, US Route 1, East Sullivan Maine and Mountain View School (grades k-8) is located in the Schoodic Foothills, on Route 200 / Bert Grey Road in Sullivan. The Town Hall is located at US Route One in West Sullivan. The Town of Sullivan holds the Sullivan Days festival yearly; which is hosted by the Town, Historical Society and the Volunteer Fire Dept. Fireworks at dark are shot off Gordon's Wharf, West Sullivan. Events are annual the first or second week in August or last week in July. Sullivan was once known for its granite industry and fishing fleet, and as a gateway to the Schoodic Peninsula, as it is to this day. The Upper Schoodic Peninsula encompasses the towns of Franklin, Sullivan, Sorrento, from Hog and Egypt Bays down to Flanders-Frenchmans Bays. Sullivan's business are featured at http://www.acadia-schoodic.org, the liaison with the Schoodic Peninsula Chamber of Comerece. Taunton Thoroughfare, a salt water river, is the northernmost home to the Atlantic Horseshoe Crab, and also the only reversing tidal falls in North America, which provided safe harbor for Colonial and American ships when the town was founded as New Bristol, in the former colonies. There is a small smokehouse named Sullivan Harbor farm locaed near the town and there are a number of Bed and Breakfasts in Sullivan that have renovated old 19th century homes developed from money derived from fishing. Make sure you stop at the Galley by the Bridge Restaurant for extraordinary seafood, pizza and burgers located (as the name says) right after the bridge. They are currently constructing a fabulous dining area.
