Merrill is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, United States. The population was 249 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.6 square miles (97.4 km²), of which, 37.6 square miles (97.4 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.08%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 249 people, 103 households, and 73 families residing in the town. The population density was 6.6 people per square mile (2.6/km²). There were 141 housing units at an average density of 3.8/sq mi (1.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.39% White, 0.80% Native American, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of the population.

There were 103 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
