Local Schools

Howland houses two public schools. Penobscot Valley High School, and Hichborn Middle School

Penobscot Valley High School, or also known as PVHS. is located in Howland, Maine. It educates students grades 9 to 12, from surrounding towns including, Sebois Plt., Enfield, West Enfield, Burlington, Mayfield, Lowell, and Howland. There are approximately 211 students enrolled, and 20 teachers employed. 54% of students attending Penobscot Valley are Male, and 46% Female. There are 59 students in the Freshmen class, 56 students in the Sophomore class, 58 students in the Junior class, and 38 students in the Senior class.

PVHS students have an opportunity to play many different sports consisting of: Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Soccer, Cross Country, Softball, Wrestling, and students are now offered to play Football as a club sport. Varsity Basketball is a big sport for the small town school, where oftentimes parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, and towns people come out to cheer on their home team Howlers. The school is pretty lame.

In the summer of 2007, PVHS underwent a massive renovation, before this, the school had many problems. The school had a very limited heating system, leaving students forced to wear jackets into class. Roofs would leak in the cramped classrooms. The renovation gave the school a complete makeover. The schools walls and roofs were redone, leaving a state approved infrastructure. Old tiles in the hallways were replaced with newer ones. The renovation left the school more atheistically pleasing. The old Workshop room, abandoned, was transformed into a new music building. Before the renovation, students had to walk outside into a run down building to go to there music classes. Under the hood changes included an advanced heating system, with a digital thermostat in every room. The school has plans to put solar panels on the roof to help with the electricity bill. Unfortunately, the renovation had no plans to replace "The Portables". "The Portables", are a series of portable classrooms connected by a hallway. The Spanish, French, IT Department, Special Services, NWEA lab, and the Central Office are located in this area. "The Portables" creates a problem. These rooms are located outside, thus allowing students to leave as they please. Also, during the winter months, the boardwalk becomes slippery, causing a hazard.

PVHS is apart of School District #31 in Maine. A total of 3 schools are managed in the school district, and there is a total number of 652 students between the 3 schools. The districts total revenue is $7,708,000. The districts total revenue per student is $11,823.

Hichborn Middle School, or HMS, was constructed in 1971. HMS currently serves 152 students in the area grades 6-8. 50% of students in the school, are qualified to receive free or reduced lunch. In the summer of 2007, the school underwent a minor renovation, along with the High school. The teachers bathrooms were transformed into one handicap restroom. Some doorways were redone, and the bathrooms doors were moved. There are plans to renovate the outdated restrooms and locker rooms, which have not been updated since the schools construction in 1971. HMS houses the Jim Curry Library Media Center, an up-to-date library that serves the middle and high school. The middle school has a small Gymnasium, called the multi-purpose room. Most PE classes are taken there, with the exception of the High School Gym, when it is unoccupied.

Fire and Ambulance

Howland has a Fire Department and ambulance that services Howland, Enfield, Maine and other surrounding towns. A large portion of the local Fire Departments funds come from an annual yard sale that they host at an old Tannery that used to bring large income to families in this area.
