According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 56.5 square miles (146.2 km²), of which, 51.6 square miles (133.5 km²) of it is land and 4.9 square miles (12.7 km²) of it (8.68%) is water.

History

The town was settled in 1762. The town is named after Col. Jonathan Buck, who moved here from Haverhill, Mass.. The town was occupied by the British during the War of 1812. Notable People

Dustin Farnum (1874-1929), born in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, was raised in Bucksport and attended the Eastern Maine Conference Seminary there. He left school at 15 and became a Broadway actor and then a film star, mostly playing the leading role in silent Westerns (a total of 42 films between 1914 and 1926). Dustin Hoffman is named after him (Hoffman's mother was a fan). Farnum's parents were both stage actors, and his brother William Farnum became one of the highest-paid film stars in Hollywood. Dustin Farnum's last film role was as George Armstrong Custer in The Flaming Frontier (1926). Ironically, actor Wayne Maunder from nearby Bangor, Maine would later play Custer in a late 1960s television series. Dustin Farnum is buried in the family cemetary plot in Bucksport.

Another veteran stage actor from Bucksport, Alexis Luce (1884-1969) had a role in The Chechahcos (1924), the only film ever made by the Alaska Moving Picture Company

Tony Little, an American TV fitness personality and businessman best known for his fitness infomercial products (most notably Tony Little's Gazelle), owns 510.5 acres of undeveloped timberland with 1,235' of frontage on Thurston Pond in Bucksport. The property has historically been managed for timber harvesting. Tony hasn't built on the property, but prefers to use it for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and nature hikes. In 2006, Tony listed this property for sale with Trimble Private Brokerage, but simultaneously ordered a feasibility study to develop a full-service RV campground/fitness and outdoor recreation center on the site. The future of this property, as well as Tony Little's existence in Bucksport, remains to be seen.

The "must-sees" in the town of Bucksport include the library steps where you can fare a chat with the locals, Irving 24 hour filling station where you're bound to find your friends, local football games, and Toziers 2 or known to Bucksport locals as T2's.
