Allagash is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, United States. The population was 277 at the 2000 census. GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 131.3 square miles (340.1 km²), of which 128.5 square miles (332.8 km²) is land and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km² or 2.16%) is water. It is the largest town in land area in Maine, although Vinalhaven and St. George (both in coastal Knox County) are larger if one adds their water areas. DemographicsAs of the census[1] of 2000, there were 277 people, 140 households, and 82 families residing in the town. The population density was 2.2 people per square mile (0.8/km²). There were 304 housing units at an average density of 2.4/sq mi (0.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.92% White, 0.36% African American, and 0.72% from two or more races. There were 140 households out of which 18.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.4% were non-families. 38.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 28.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.98 and the average family size was 2.56. In the town the population was spread out with 14.4% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 17.7% from 25 to 44, 36.8% from 45 to 64, and 24.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50 years. For every 100 females there were 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.9 males. The median income for a household in the town was $18,125, and the median income for a family was $26,250. Males had a median income of $26,875 versus $17,813 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,968. About 15.1% of families and 18.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.3% of those under the age of eighteen and 23.5% of those sixty five or over. External links
