Preston is a town in Caroline County, Maryland, United States. The population was 566 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code is 21655. The primary phone exchange is 673 and the area code is 410. Preston is home to the Linchester Mill, circa 1682. During the Revolutionary War it supplied grain to George Washington's troops.
GeographyPreston is located at (38.710883, -75.908297)[1]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land. DemographicsAs of the census[2] of 2000, there were 566 people, 225 households, and 168 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,009.2 people per square mile (390.2/km²). There were 242 housing units at an average density of 431.5/sq mi (166.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.93% White, 4.77% African American, 0.71% Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.18% from other races. There were 225 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.8% were married couples living together, 9.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% were non-families. 20.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.86. In the town the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 38.2% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males. The median income for a household in the town was $48,125, and the median income for a family was $53,365. Males had a median income of $37,083 versus $23,182 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,617. About 3.6% of families and 4.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.9% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
