Ringgold is a town in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,660 at the 2000 census. Ringgold is named for Major Samuel Ringgold, the hero of the battle of Palo Alto near Brownsville, Texas, in the Mexican-American War. Ringgold, the son of a U.S. representative from Maryland, was known for his particularly effective use of artillery. Ringgold was the first American casualty of the Mexican War.

Ringgold was the birthplace of World War II prisoner of war Duvall Cortez Wimberly, Sr. (1917-2007), a veteran educator in Bienville and neighboring Webster Parish. A resident of Springhill, Wimberly was a former officer of American Ex-Prisoners of War, an organization chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1942, and based in Arlington, Texas. He was president of the organization in 1974.

The romance and mystery novelist Barbara Colley was born in Ringgold in 1947.

Geography

Ringgold is located at 32°19′35″N, 93°17′1″W (32.326475, -93.283588)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,660 people, 636 households, and 410 families residing in the town. The population density was 715.3 people per square mile (276.3/km²). There were 749 housing units at an average density of 322.8/sq mi (124.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 43.92% White, 55.30% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.06% Asian, and 0.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.

There were 636 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.4% were married couples living together, 26.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 21.1% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 77.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 68.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $15,326, and the median income for a family was $21,563. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $15,625 for females. The per capita income for the town was $9,817. About 36.5% of families and 38.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 48.9% of those under age 18 and 33.3% of those age 65 or over.
