Bicknell is a city in Knox County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,378 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Bicknell is located at 38°46′25″N, 87°18′29″W (38.773512, -87.307967)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,378 people, 1,395 households, and 910 families residing in the city. The population density was 858.1/km² (2,216.8/mi²). There were 1,581 housing units at an average density of 401.6/km² (1,037.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.13% White, 0.44% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.59% of the population.

There were 1,395 households out of which 29.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,046, and the median income for a family was $32,935. Males had a median income of $31,487 versus $18,162 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,027. About 18.5% of families and 26.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 38.4% of those under age 18 and 21.0% of those age 65 or over.

The city was once well known for its very active underground coal mine, the Sunshine Mine which was right near the town. On another note, the county fair is held there yearly.
