Somonauk is a village in DeKalb County, Illinois and LaSalle County, Illinois. The population was 1,295 at the 2000 census.
GeographySomonauk is located at (41.633940, -88.681945).[1] According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all of it land. DemographicsAs of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,295 people, 500 households, and 347 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,113.4 people per square mile (819.7/km²). There were 512 housing units at an average density of 835.6/sq mi (324.1/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.31% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.77% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.01% of the population. There were 500 households out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.16. In the village the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. The median income for a household in the village was $45,370, and the median income for a family was $51,591. Males had a median income of $40,156 versus $23,690 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,110. About 2.2% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.9% of those under age 18 and 10.5% of those age 65 or over. EducationThe village of Somonauk is served by Somonauk Public School (K-12). The school's athletic teams are known as the Bobcats. School colors are blue and gold. References
