Silvis is a city in Rock Island County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,269 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Silvis is located at 41°30′11″N, 90°24′48″W (41.503034, -90.413324)^[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census^[2] of 2000, there were 7,269 people, 2,984 households, and 1,939 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,993.8 people per square mile (768.9/km²). There were 3,135 housing units at an average density of 859.9/sq mi (331.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 86.09% White, 3.45% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 6.51% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.36% of the population.

There were 2,984 households out of which 31.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $35,047, and the median income for a family was $41,390. Males had a median income of $32,451 versus $22,050 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,764. About 8.4% of families and 9.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.9% of those under age 18 and 6.5% of those age 65 or over.

History

Silvis is the home of Hero Street, USA. Hero Street was named in honor of eight soldiers of Mexican-American descent, all of whom who lived on Hero Street (formerly Second Street), who gave their lives fighting in World War II. This street, consisting of roughly twenty-five homes, has sent over one hundred residents into the military since World War II.
