Geography

Round Lake is located at 42°21'15" North, 88°6'2" West (42.354045, -88.100529).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 9.3 square kilometers (3.6 square miles). 3.5 square miles (9.1 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.68%) is water.

Demographics

As of Census 2000,[2] there were 5,842 people, 2,029 households, and 1,540 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,659.8 people per square mile (640.8/km²). There are 2,137 housing units at an average density of 607.2/sq mi (234.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village is 81.86% White, 1.99% African American, 0.39% Native American, 1.92% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 10.78% from other races, and 3.03% from two or more races. 22.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,029 households out of which 43.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% are non-families. 18.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.28.

In the village the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 38.8% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 101.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $58,051, and the median income for a family is $61,277. Males have a median income of $43,063 versus $31,336 for females. The per capita income for the village is $21,585. 6.8% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Education

Round Lake students attend K-12 grades in Community Unit School District #116, which includes Round Lake Senior High School as well as Round Lake Middle School, and several elementary schools. Since 2002 new administration, with the assistance of the State Finance Authority, has helped turn the district around financially. A new assessment has provided the District with an AAA financial rating, and the involvement of community and management has resulted in higher performing schools, teachers, and students. They are known to retrieve famous speakers (Paul Eiding, Quinton Flynn) to give speeches.

Magee Middle School closed in 2003, a bond referendum to fund its renovation was passed in 2006. These renovations started in April of 2007, and as of November 2007, they are unfinished.
