Gilman is a city in Douglas Township, Iroquois County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,793 at the 2000 census.

Gilman is located along the main roadways of Interstate 57, U.S. Route 24, and U.S. Route 45, has been named "The City of the Crossroads".

Geography

Gilman is located at 40°46′3″N, 87°59′37″W (40.767466, -87.993611)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.94%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,793 people, 739 households, and 472 families residing in the city. The population density was 848.0 people per square mile (328.1/km²). There were 816 housing units at an average density of 385.9/sq mi (149.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.08% White, 0.22% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 5.30% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.04% of the population.

There were 739 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,450, and the median income for a family was $46,016. Males had a median income of $32,188 versus $18,875 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,396. 9.9% of the population and 7.3% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.7% are under the age of 18 and 8.5% are 65 or older.

Amtrak, the national passenger rail service, provides service to Gilman. Amtrak Train 391, the southbound Saluki, is scheduled to depart Gilman at 10:44am daily with service to Rantoul, Champaign-Urbana, Mattoon, Effingham, Centralia, Du Quoin, and Carbondale. Amtrak Train 393, the southbound Illini, is scheduled to depart Gilman at 5:34pm daily serving the same points as the southbound Saluki. Amtrak Train 390, the northbound Saluki, is scheduled to depart Gilman at 10:53am daily with service to Kankakee, Homewood, and Chicago. Amtrak Train 392, the northbound Illini, is scheduled to depart Gilman at 7:28pm daily serving the same points as the northbound Saluki.

Gilman has a mayor by the name of Lyle Price he is married and has five children of Gilman, Chicago, and Benton Illinois. He has seven grandchildren all of Chicago and Gilman Illinois. He is retired so that only means more time devoted to making the best town possible!
