Elmwood is a city in Peoria County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,945 at the 2000 census. Elmwood is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Growth in the city of Peoria is extending towards Elmwood, in addition to the village of Dunlap.

Geography

Elmwood is located at 40°46′42″N, 89°58′6″W (40.778378, -89.968355).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,945 people, 772 households, and 565 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,577.1 people per square mile (610.5/km²). There were 806 housing units at an average density of 653.5/sq mi (253.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.71% White, 0.15% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.82% of the population.

There were 772 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.3% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $44,500, and the median income for a family was $51,505. Males had a median income of $37,981 versus $22,557 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,797. About 2.4% of families and 2.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.6% of those under age 18 and 3.5% of those age 65 or over.

Facts of Interest

Elmwood is the birthplace of the sculptor Lorado Taft and is host to some of his works. The most notable is the statue called "The Pioneers," which is situated in the town's central park.

Elmwood also hosts an annual Strawberry Festival the first Saturday in June. Visitors can eat a variety of strawberry desserts, stroll through a craft fair and classic car show, and enjoy local talent and musical groups on the bandstand.

Business in the 1800s

Here are some typical newspaper advertisements and business directory notices from Elmwood in 1866 and 1870 mentioning some of the companies in Elmwood.

1866 - WM. DOUGLAS & Co. - Carriage & Wagon Makers, Near the Depot, - Elmwood, Ill. would respectively announce to the Farming community, and all others interested, that they are now fully prepared to manufacture all kinds of Carriages & Lumber Wagons. In a style which they warrant to give satisfaction, in respect to both Workmanship and Materials, the work being done under their immediate inspection, and, good iron and well-seasoned lumber only, being used. Open and Caliche Top Buggies made in the most fashionable style. Lumber Wagons with iron or Wooden Axles or Thimble Skeins, and fitted with Seats and Patent Brakes. One Horse Wagons, etc., got up promptly to order. Re-fitting, Repairing done to order.
1870 - JONES & VANDERVOORT - Keep a full stock of Dry Goods, Furnishings, Boots, Shoes, Hats, Caps, Carpeting, &. They also have in their employ a first-class Tailor, so that persons can be accommodated with goods ready-made or unmade. They are among the early settlers in the place, and are known to be gentlemen of enterprise and reliability, identifying themselves with every progressive feature of the place.
1870 - CALDWELL & VENN -- Manufacture Carriages, Wagons and Buggies, and they do General Blacksmithing on call. They put up just as fine a Carriage as can be turned out of any shop in the State; hence they should receive the patronage of the public, in their line, instead of giving it to other rival shops of the town.
