Carlyle is a city in Clinton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,406 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clinton County.[1] Carlyle is located approximately 50 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, and is home to Illinois' largest man-made lake, Carlyle Lake, and to the General Dean Suspension Bridge, a suspension bridge that is the only one of its kind in Illinois and crosses the Kaskaskia River.
HistoryThe town was previously thought to be named for Thomas Carlyle, Scottish essayist.[2] However, the city was given the name "Carlisle" in approximately 1819. Thomas Carlyle's first major work, Sartor Resartus, was not written until 1832. The spelling was changed to "Carlyle" in 1828, making it quite unlikely that Carlyle is named for the writer.
