History

The town is named after Sidney Breese, a United States Senator and a contemporary of President Abraham Lincoln.[1] Breese was founded in 1855.

Growth was slow because of diseases due to undrained land, causing local residents to erect crosses on their properties in hopes of protecting their families[citation needed]. Real growth began in 1855, upon the arrival of the Mississippi and Ohio Railroad[citation needed].
