Kaumakani is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 607 at the 2000 census.
HistoryKaumakani was officially known as Makaweli for over forty years: in 1914, the Board on Geographic Names ruled that the community was to be named Makaweli, and only in 1956 did it rule that it was to be named Kaumakani.[1] Kaumakani's post office (ZIP code 96769) is still named Makaweli.[2] GeographyKaumakani is located at (21.920292, -159.624281)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.7 km²), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (8.57%) is water. DemographicsAs of the census[4] of 2000, there were 607 people, 207 households, and 162 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 635.7 people per square mile (246.7/km²). There were 234 housing units at an average density of 245.1/sq mi (95.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 3.79% White, 77.27% Asian, 2.47% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 16.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.27% of the population.2007 majority of the culture is of filipino descent. There were 207 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.9% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.3% were non-families. 18.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.34. In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 104.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.7 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $34,583, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $26,429 versus $23,654 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,024. About 8.7% of families and 11.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.8% of those under age 18 and 7.7% of those age 65 or over.
