Austell is a city in Cobb and Douglas Counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 5,359 at the 2000 census. Census Estimates for 2005 show a population of 6,566. The city was named after the Austell family. Austell means "from the east."
GeographyAustell is located at (33.815905, -84.636242)[3]. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.7 square miles (14.8 km²), of which, 5.7 square miles (14.7 km²) of it is land and 0.18% is water. DemographicsAs of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,359 people, 2,009 households, and 1,386 families residing in the city. The population density was 942.1 people per square mile (363.6/km²). There were 2,144 housing units at an average density of 376.9/sq mi (145.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.42% White, 24.58% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 6.40% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.07% of the population. There were 2,009 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 18.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.15. In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 37.0% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males. The median income for a household in the city was $38,933, and the median income for a family was $39,635. Males had a median income of $31,750 versus $22,944 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,924. About 11.0% of families and 12.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.0% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over. Famous residents
