The historic Town of Saguache (pronounced /səˈwætʃ/, suh-WATCH) is a Statutory Town that is the county seat and the most populous town of Saguache County, Colorado, United States.[5] The population was 578 at the U.S. Census 2000. Convicted cannibal Alferd Packer served time in the Saguache County Jail.

Name

The name Saguache comes from a Ute language word meaning "blue earth" or "water at blue earth". The word shares a similar root and pronunciation with Saguaro (cactus). The Spanish language version of this name is usually spelled Saguache, while the English language version is often spelled Sawatch.

Geography

Saguache is located at 38°5′14″N, 106°8′29″W (38.087104, -106.141510)[6].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 578 people, 262 households, and 160 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,510.7 people per square mile (587.3/km²). There were 328 housing units at an average density of 857.3/sq mi (333.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 79.93% White, 2.60% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 13.15% from other races, and 4.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 34.43% of the population.

There were 262 households out of which 26.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% were non-families. 33.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.73.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $21,544, and the median income for a family was $30,221. Males had a median income of $24,306 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,139. About 13.7% of families and 18.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.6% of those under age 18 and 16.5% of those age 65 or over.
