Flomaton is a town in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 1,588.

Geography

Flomaton is located at 31°0′32″N, 87°15′21″W (31.008921, -87.255746)^[1].

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.8 km²), of which, 5.3 square miles (13.7 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.56%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census^[2] of 2000, there were 1,588 people, 644 households, and 446 families residing in the town. The population density was 300.1 people per square mile (115.9/km²). There were 787 housing units at an average density of 148.7/sq mi (57.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 73.61% White, 23.24% Black or African American, 1.32% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.44% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 644 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 16.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $25,875, and the median income for a family was $34,141. Males had a median income of $30,083 versus $15,292 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,360. About 16.5% of families and 21.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 31.0% of those under age 18 and 18.5% of those age 65 or over.
