Addison is a town in Addison County, Vermont, United States. It was founded October 14, 1761. The population was 1,393 at the 2000 census.

History

Addison, Vermont, was chartered on October 14, 1761. Benning Wentworth named the town Addison after Joseph Addison.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 49.0 square miles (126.8 km²), of which, 41.7 square miles (108.1 km²) of it is land and 7.2 square miles (18.8 km²) of it (14.81%) is water. The Dead Creek and the Hospital Creek are 2 creeks that run through Addison, and Lake Champlain is on the west border of Addison. The highest point is Snake Mountain, which is 1281 ft above Lake Champlain.

Churches

There are three churches in Addison. The Addison Community Baptist Church at the town center, the West Addison Methodist Church at the West Addison village center, and the Menonite Church which meets once a month at the Addison Central School.

Utilities

Electricity is provided by Green Mountain Power. Telephone service is provided by Waitsfield/Champlain Valley Telecom and internet is provided by Green Mountain Access which is a branch of Waitsfield/Champlain Valley Telecom. Town Water is provided by Tri-Town water, serving Addison, Bridport, Vermont, and Shoreham, Vermont.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,393 people, 494 households, and 402 families residing in the town. The population density was 33.4 people per square mile (12.9/km²). There were 651 housing units at an average density of 15.6/sq mi (6.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.42% White, 0.14% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.57% of the population.

There were 494 households out of which 39.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.7% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.6% were non-families. 14.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $45,063, and the median income for a family was $48,696. Males had a median income of $31,328 versus $25,602 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,000. About 2.9% of families and 4.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.5% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.

Schooling

The town of Addison, Vermont is part of the Addison North West Supervisory Union. The town has its own elementary school, known as Addison Central School, serving grades K-6 at the town center, but students in grades 7-12 are taught at Vergennes Union High School in Vergennes, Vermont.
