Baileyville (a.k.a Woodland) is a town in Washington County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,686 at the 2000 census. The town was originally settled by Quakers in 1780. In 1830, Ezekiel Bailey began commercial manufacture of oilcloth in 1830, when it was made by hand. The business flourished and expanded until it comprised several factories, which were burnt down in 1921.[1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 41.1 square miles (106.4 km²), of which 36.5 square miles (94.4 km²) is land and 12.0 km² (4.6 sq mi, 11.25%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,686 people, 726 households, and 484 families residing in the town. The population density was 46.2 people per square mile (17.9/km²). There were 927 housing units at an average density of 25.4/sq mi (9.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.22% White, 0.06% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.59% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.59% of the population.

There were 726 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,658, and the median income for a family was $37,292. Males had a median income of $38,269 versus $19,531 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,087. About 9.1% of families and 10.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.5% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those age 65 or over.

The high school, Woodland Jr/Sr. High School has about 250 students in grades 7-12. The schools principal is Patricia Metta, with Vice Principal Chuck Noyes. The school has won the Class D Girls Basketball Championship 4 times the most recent being in 2008.
