Choosing the best local daycare can be tricky. There are a lot of factors to consider: location, prices, hours, the environment of the daycare, how trained the caretakers are, how and who certifies the quality of the daycare. It can be hard to know that you are getting the truest picture of a daycare, which is why an unannounced visit is so important. But when you do visit your local daycare in search of the best one for you and your child, it is helpful to have specific things in mind to be on the lookout for. Tables and Chairs Your local daycare should be sure to have tables, chairs, and other furniture that is the proper height for the age of the child it will be serving. This ensures that children are not get injured getting into or out of meals or other activities (such as arts and crafts) that may be held at the table. Furniture that is proportionate to the age of the child also enables the child to be able to do more things on their own. Be sure to also ensure that all the furniture your child will come into contact with has rounded edges and/or padded corners. Bookshelves and Other Furniture Beyond have kid-appropriate tables and chairs, the other furniture that your child comes into contact with at your local daycare should also be safe. Items such as bookshelves and other organizational furniture must be solid and firmly attached (preferably bolted), to the wall it stands against. For the child who loves to climb, bookshelves that have sturdy shelving and are securely attached to the wall they lean against, are a must for both the safety of the climber and the other children in the vicinity. Beyond that, bookshelves and other bins and chests should not be much taller than the age-range of the children who are using them. When it comes to toy-chests, be sure to notice if the hinges are slow-close hinges or just plain flap-hinges. Your local daycare should be doing everything they can to ensure that no fingers get pinched! Flooring Be sure to also check the flooring of the local daycares you are considering for your child. Like other areas of safety, slippery floors can be avoided. The flooring that is safest for your child is carpeting, but not all daycares are fully carpeted. If your local daycare is fully carpeted, rest assured that they have done everything they can to ensure that make the entire building has kid-friendly flooring. But not all daycares are completely carpeted. For whatever reason your local daycare may have hardwood, laminate, or tile flooring. If that is the case, be sure to notice whether or not there are area rugs being used. For the safety of your child there need to be rugs, and those areas rugs must have a good non-slip backing. Without the non-slip backing the areas rugs are actually more dangerous than uncovered non-carpeted flooring. When it comes to the safety of your local daycare, it is paramount to know what their legal, licensure, and personal standards are. Safety is especially something to be observant of when choosing a daycare as it will help give you a peace of mind once you make your final decision. One of the most important aspects of local daycare safety is to remember the idea that prevention is the best cure.
