Thursday, 20 October 2011
Like artists who are naturally gifted in painting, music, sculpting, there are naturally gifted people who know how to create wonderful dishes with virtually any ingredients available. But if you are the exact opposite, a person who only desires the dining table than seeing how people move around the kitchen (let alone be in the kitchen), then you are not a hopeless case. You can actually learn how to cook, how to cook right and acquire the skill of a chef. No, don't be too dreadful with the idea of becoming a chef. This article cannot turn you into one. What it can do is to make you hate cooking less and love eating even more. All you have to do is to remember the following thoughts and cooking tips to make your kitchen more appealing:

Great chefs have to start somewhere. Okay, let's begin right here. Many chefs may have naturally gifted taste buds and skill to make every ingredient work well together, but it took years for them to develop this skill. Where do they get it? Probably they are taking cooking tips of their grandmother or in a culinary school. The point is, everybody has to start somewhere. And that includes you! So even if you don't plan to join Hell's Kitchen, you can start learning how to cook by starting somewhere. In short: You can cook!

Try simple dishes first. Sometimes, you get the feeling that your kitchen does not reciprocate the love to give to it. That might be because you are cooking something that's beyond your skill. If you wish to learn how to cook, choose recipes that are not too complicated. You don't join a marathon if you can't even run 2 miles. Your skill should match the recipe you do, even if you will base everything on a cookbook.

Speaking of cookbooks; make sure that you read everything first and understand the instructions well before starting a dish. Cookbooks are good teachers of you want to learn how to cook, but make sure you have enough time to cook the recipe before you start cooking.

If you are beginning to learn how to cook, do not make things too complicated for you. If you are working on different ingredients, arrange them first according to the order they will be used. Chefs often measure out ingredients ahead of time so there is no reason not to do them.

This is not yet the right time to experiment and make the recipe your own. Stick to the plan, like good soldiers do in a battle.

Get organized. Learning how to cook is not just following instructions from your cook book. It is also about being organized in the kitchen. Keeping you, your kitchen, and kitchen counter clean and tidy will less likely to create panic. It is a good idea to wear apron. Always have a clean cloth to wipe any mess you have created. A small fire extinguisher can build up confidence.

If you think you'd rather order pizza than eat what have just came out from your little kitchen experiment, then try again. Practice makes perfect, right? And oh! Don't hesitate to seek help from someone who actually knows how to cook. They can be a good teacher; plus, there's another person to laugh with if you happen to burn your pan yet again.
